Chapter Ten: Spiritual code of Conduct for Tyagi-Sadhu, Vrat-dhari brothers, Vrat-dhari sisters and Devoted Grahasth of the Gunatit Samaj

  1. To attain the state known as brahm-roop and to worship with total love and devotion the supreme Lord known as Par-brahm is our ultimate goal.  The realisation of this goal will render us free from our ego (dehbhav) and will enable us to experience the divine peace, bliss and happiness of Akshardham from this moment.
  2. In order to attain a solid divine attachment with the Pratyaksh Guruhari whereby we have completely surrendered ourselves to Him; obeying his each and every command without any doubts or questions, we should carry out all activities with the prime intention of pleasing him and him alone.  This is our ultimate sadhana
  3. Loyalty, devotion, fidelity and obedience to the Pratyaksh Guruhari is imperative in our sadhana. However, it is also necessary that we afford equal respect to all Gunatit Swaroops, serving them with mahatmya and devotion with a view to gaining the true spiritual guidance from them.
  4. We should lead our lives in order that it is pure, simple and straight forward.  Our thoughts, speech and actions should always be in unison. There should be no contradictions at all.  Maintain politeness of speech at all times.  Truth, honesty and integrity should never be compromised.  Purity and innocence, the virtuous qualities of a sadhu should always be held with high regard.  Guidance should be sought regularly from the divine Gunatit Sants and the holy scriptures should be read and meditated upon frequently.
  5. Not only is it important that our behaviour always reflects our spiritual code of conduct (Swadharmayukta), but it is also important that our behaviour does not create any negative impressions upon the minds of those whom we encounter.
  6. As prescribed in the Vachnamritams G.I 37, G.II.7, 25, 28, 41, 63 and G. III. 21  – Seva, i.e. devotional service for the Lord and his devotees should be the main aim of our lives. seva should be held as being sacred, thus we should eagerly practice seva and make it a habit, if not an addiction.
  7. As prescribed in Vachnamrut Loya 5, we should practice loyalty, honesty, sincerity and total obedience towards our Pratyaksh Guruhari at all times.  Whatever He commands should be undertaken with complete faith and total devotion. We should accept the Pratyaksh Guruhari as omniscient, divine and the almighty one who controls everyone and everything.
  8. As per the Swami-ni-vato, spiritual friendship (Sahrad-bhav) should be nurtured and practised until it becomes a natural habit.  All sambandh-walas (devotees of Shreeji Maharaj) should be treated with respect.  One should maintain unity, harmony and spiritual friendship with all sambandh-walas. If one is required to tolerate or endure any kind of inconvenience on behalf of them, then one should do so with pleasure. However do not gossip or speak ill of others, do not listen to gossip or any kind of malicious talk regarding anyone.  Do not allow such negative talk to continue. Under such circumstances, be brave and bold – and pray intently to the Lord.
  9. If at any time the guru’s commands are in direct conflict with your religion (Swadharma) and would cause you to violate your vows of celibacy or cause you to compromise your spiritual disciplines – then become alert!  Pray to the Lord.  If the guru’s commands (agna) leads you to violate spiritual laws and causes you to indulge in either man, swad, sneha, lobh or kam (pride, taste, attachment, avarice or lust) – then you should not obey his commands. Instead, pray intensely to the Lord, He will surely guide you.
  10. “Under no circumstances will I lose my peace of mind, state of happiness or internal bliss……” – This should always be at the forefront of one’s mind.   If under any circumstances, one feels unhappy, distressed or disturbed, then one should instantly turn to the Lord by praying to him… until a state of tranquillity and equanimity is achieved.
  11. Even if we dislike those whom we meet or disagree with them, we should endeavour to regard them as divine fellow aspirants – ‘jivan mukta and accept them as brahm-niyantrit i.e that their behaviour is inspired and controlled by brahma, the supreme Lord.  We should whole-heartedly accept our own faults and pray for forgiveness but should not contemplate forming opinions or any kind of negative impressions about our fellow aspirants.
  12. Whatever is happening, has happened or is about to happen, is definitely inspired and controlled by the Pratyaksh Guruhari.  We should believe that whatever He does is done consciously for the welfare of all concerned.  If we fail to believe this sincerely, we should pray until we attain the state of mind whereby this belief is strong and solid. Then speak and act as inspired by the Lord.  To aid the process of removing any doubts and disturbances; thus restoring your equanimity and faith in the Lord, you should maintain a friendship with one whom you respect and who has attained a higher spiritual understanding than yourself as he will be able to clarify any misunderstandings.  Then behave in a way which will ensure that a Gunatit Sant or the Guruhari is not placed in an embarassing or helpless position.
  • In order to attain and ensure one’s constant spiritual progress
  • In order to naturally accept and admit one’s own faults
  • In order to enhance and consolidate the relationship one holds with the    Pratyaksh Swaroop
  • In order to avoid any kind of misfortune along the journey one takes in one’s sadhana
  • In order to remain constantly submerged in the divine Lord
  • In order to attain the constant peace, bliss and happiness of Akshardham

The friendship and spiritual guidance of a Gunatit Sant is a pre-requisite.  Thus everyone should seek to establish and maintain sambandh with an accomplished Gunatit Sant.

All the above mentioned disciplines are as prescribed by the Pratyaksh Guruhari and should be followed by all devotees.  His command (agna or vachan) should be accepted as the absolute discipline and religion.  To act in a manner which pleases the Lord is true love, devotion and worship. One should firmly believe this and act accordingly – this is the perfect way of life.
