Chapter Thirty: Gnan-Samadhi in the Conscious, Alert State

Jagratta ma Gnan-Samadhi

If we were to attain a supreme state of consciousness whereby we intrinsically held the virtuous  qualities of non-pride, non-taste, non-attachment, non-covetousness, non-lust (Nirmani, Nirswadi, Nirsnéhi, Nirlobhi, Nishkami) then we would be in a constant state of communion with God, as stated in the Vachnamrut. G. III. 27.

Therefore, we have been highly fortunate in discovering and recognising the supreme Lord and should endeavour to acquire the virtues mentioned above.

Pride (Man)
We should seek out the virtues of all devotees who we may meet face to face, and even those whom we think about or happen to remember. If we constantly practice pondering over their virtues and singing their praises then we attain the quality of non-pride.

Covetous (Lobh)
The mode of avarice or covetousness in our lives which is acceptable is the passion to assist and provide help to the Lord’s devotees. Do whatever is required to aid them and facilitate their needs, give them whatever they ask for. Do this with the sole intention of pleasing the Lord, in return you will be granted the virtue of non-covetousness

Non-Taste (Nirswadi)
Our only desire should be for the attainment of the Lord. If we eat, drink etc. for the sole purpose of nourishing our physical body so that it will have the required energy and strength to perform the Lord’s service then we will become nirswadi. We should not devour food because we love its taste, but because it serves a purpose and the Lord would be please that we are consuming it.

Non-Lust (Nishkami)
We should have only one aspiration, one desire, one passion. That should be to achieve the status whereby the Lord will be contented and pleased with us. Thus everything we do, our convictions and beliefs, our feelings, our emotions and our actions should be in tune with the Lord’s wishes and commands.

Non-attachment (Nirsnéhi)
Any feelings of attachment should be for the Lord alone. The fondness, affection and devotion towards anyone should only be felt because they are the Lord’s devotees.

Ego (Aham)
The only pride we should feel is that of being the ‘slave of the Lord’.

Nature (Prakruti)
By nature we should be humble, courteous and respectful towards the Lord.

Our own characteristics (Swabhav)
Our aspiration should be to serve the Lord and do whatever is necessary for His worship.

If we remain alert and insist on our indriyas and antahkarans to practice as illustrated above then we will attain the spiritual status mentioned in the Vachnamrut  G. III 26 and Vachnamrut G. I. 27.
