Making time to commune with God by Pujya Sunilbhai Gandhi

As per Vachanamrut G I 1, to constantly engage the mind in God is the most difficult attainment. This type of bliss is seldom felt continuously. This is because we seek solace and refuge in things material rather than spiritual and we do not take the time to allow God to take his place in our consciousness. We seek escapism in our favourite activities and hobbies such as watching television, undertaking daily chores, listening to our favourite music, playing sport or being involved in social activities.

Like a man mad with thirst, we should yearn only for His bliss. This alone should become our lifeline and our only solace. But this is where we tend to fall down; God is real but we do not take the time to commune with Him.

In order to achieve such communion, we have to purposely apply ourselves. As per Vachanamrut G I 23 we have to dedicate time and effort for this because such a spiritual level cannot be achieved overnight. On a daily basis we need to dedicate special time for Him. In order to make time for Him, we have to quite literally switch the television off, not be obsessed with our daily chores, re-arrange our schedule for going out to play sport or meet friends. Even the swaroopo whom are in constant communion with God, take the time to do dhyan as part of their normal daily activities.

With constant practice, instead of God being intangible, when we introspect we should feel as if we are returning home to a familiar and safe place:

Hai pratyaksh Guruhari Pappaji,

You are within,

Your face is that of a very dear friend,

You are my refuge and abode,

I do know You and I do love You.

By inviting Him to spend time with us, and contemplating on Him, allowing Him to penetrate every single facet of our being, thereby becoming saturated with divinity, we can become one with Him such that He is never far from us in any activity.

Material things will then no longer provide escapism. The only place where we can get rest is in God, and God alone. Therefore, if we take the time to keep the manifest God (Pappaji), then every moment we can keep our minds on God.
